Drawing and Talking Therapy

What is Drawing and Talking Therapy?

An Introduction...

Drawing and Talking Therapy is a safe, non-intrusive intervention designed to support children and young people in processing emotional pain or trauma. While simple in approach, it is highly effective in helping children feel more emotionally secure and resilient over time.

During each session, your child is invited to draw whatever they choose in a relaxed and supportive environment. They are then gently encouraged to talk about their drawings using storytelling language, helping them explore and make sense of their thoughts and feelings.

Children often struggle to express their feelings verbally, particularly when they are experiencing emotional distress. This can sometimes present as behaviours such as anger, anxiety, withdrawal, sadness, or difficulties at home or school.

By giving a child the space to draw freely, without interruption or judgement, the creative process helps access the right side of the brain, where emotions are stored. Talking about their drawings in a safe and trusting environment allows the child to begin to understand and process their internal world in a way that feels manageable and supported.

If you are looking for a gentle, creative, and effective way to support a child’s emotional wellbeing, this programme can provide a meaningful and nurturing pathway forward.

Who is Drawing and Talking suitable for?

Drawing and Talking can have benefits for every child! But this intervention can be particularly beneficial for children who may be experiencing challenges such as anxiety, bullying, family separation, medical diagnosis, bereavement, trauma or major life changes (house move, new sibling, school transition etc). It is also SEN-friendly and can be a valuable support for pupils who are currently on waiting lists for services such as CAMHS. Children must be at least 5 years old to access this support. It is not behaviour modification, nor is it designed to identify “what is wrong” with a child. Instead, it provides a safe, consistent space where children can explore and make sense of their internal world at their own pace. Drawing and Talking is also available for adults! Get in touch if you'd like to find out how it could help you.

Why is this support so effective?

The power of creativity...

The brain has two hemispheres, each responsible for different functions. The left side is associated with language, logic, organisation, and sequencing, which are skills that help us make sense of the world consciously. The right side is linked more closely to the unconscious mind and is responsible for creativity, imagination, sensory experiences, and emotional processing.

When a person experiences trauma or a highly distressing event, the brain’s usual processing can become disrupted. In these moments, the ability to use language and logical thinking may temporarily reduce, often described as feeling “lost for words” or as though “time stood still.” This is part of the body’s natural protective response.

While this response is helpful in the moment, it can mean that difficult experiences are not fully processed. Instead, they may be held in parts of the brain connected to emotions and sensory memory, which are not always easily accessed through talking alone.

There is a common belief that painful memories can simply be forgotten over time. However, unprocessed experiences can continue to affect how a child feels and behaves, even if they are not consciously aware of it.

Drawing and Talking Therapy works by gently engaging both creative and verbal processes. By allowing children to express themselves through drawing and then talk about their creations in a safe and supportive space, they are better able to explore and make sense of their experiences. This can help reduce emotional distress and support healthier emotional development over time.

What are the logistics?

Here's the basics...

Drawing and Talking Therapy is a 12 week intervention. These 30 minute sessions should take place at the same time, day and location each week for 12 weeks (don't worry, I can accommodate holidays!). Our schedule should be planned and predictable from the offset to support your child in building trust in our therapeutic relationship.

During Drawing and Talking, we use HB Pencil ONLY. No colours or other mediums are used. This is because the focus is on the story behind the image rather than the image itself.

I will be providing these sessions from The CARESCO Centre in Sawtry, however I can discuss travelling to your home if this is more appropriate. You would have to be able to provide a private and confidential space, with a table or desk and two chairs which can sit side by side. I will provide all of the resources needed.

The cost for the full 12 week course is £300 if delivered in Sawtry. Mileage will be calculated and added if I am travelling to your home address. If you have siblings who would like to both receive Drawing and Talking Therapy, we can discuss a discounted family price. Siblings will always been separately, but we can arrange one after the other.

All sessions are fully confidential between myself and the child. I will send you my safeguarding policy prior to the commencement of the work so both you and your child will know the only occasions I would have to share information.
